An exuberant bell followed by the upbeat tone of The Beach Boys roused us all from our beds this beautiful morning. Campers gathered on the driveway throwing Frisbees and footballs as well as playing a bit of volleyball while Matt R. “lifeguarded” from atop a ladder. With a pleasant wake up and a delicious breakfast camp headed down to the waterfront to cheer on our Beach Day whale.
While everyone else was sleeping Cole D. got up nice and early and began the five mile swim around the lake. He came screaming in finishing strong with a superb butterfly sprint to finish. After the cheers and applause subsided camp was shocked to learn Cole had broken yet another camp swim record with an hour fifty two minute whale, six minutes faster than the previous record.
Cleared that he was in good shape and high spirits camp returned to their cabins to clean-up and then head to the field to roll out for the beach. One short bus ride later camp stormed on to the beach for a day of fun and sun. After the customary charge into the Atlantic the campers took their pick of activities from the Swedish lawn-game Koob to enjoying the splash and surf. The boys in the water received a special treat as Erik J came out and taught a good portion the proper positioning and technique to body surf the incoming waves. Alex U. spent almost all of his time in the water hunting for small sea-life to observe and study taking our nature program with him wherever he goes.
After getting to enjoy the beach for several solid hours we loaded up and headed back inland arriving just before dinner. As the staff milled through the campers handing out suggestions for the strut contest to clean off the salt and sand Mike M. gave us a quick history lesson. BRC legend Pete Haas was the creator of both the beach day and strut contest tradition. Watching each gent strut down the catwalk and into the lake proved a great experience for all and provided fresh cool water to rejuvenate each of them. Tired from a long day of excitement from a record smashing whale to a smashing time at the beach the boys headed for bed to be serenaded by the resident loons. A good time was had by all. Just a few more days left and so much left to come.
