When the first thumps of Ryno’s drum pealed across the Grove this afternoon to elated surprise, one thing was clear:  Birch Rock had never seen an Opening Day quite like this one. Sure, some parents and newcomers may have baffled at first, but the wave of enthusiasm swept up the community and, by the time the black elk and red wolves clashed on the field, the parade of cars had exited and the summer was well underway.

War paint and sweat were soon solved by the brisk waters of McWain Pond and empty bellies filled by delicious and filling pasta dinner, where proper table manners were returned to use with no complaint. When the community headed down to the birch rock for Tree Talk, the setting sun across the placid waters provided the perfect backdrop for camper and staff introductions, which were all presented with particular poise and gusto. And, by nightfall, the hillside was unusually quiet for Opening Day, the kids’ energy expended and thoughts turned to the first full day of activities. After all, there’s another day not touched yet, so to all a warm good night.
