Buck Hard? Debates? … Whale bells?!?! – July 17th
Posted by: Birch Rock Camp
Today was a hit! The morning at BRC started with a beautiful open sky and instant sun, a wonderful redemption from yesterday’s downpour of rain. The morning meal was concluded with an announcement from Jungle Jeff that today was Buck Hard day! Buck Hard (Milton Hard) was the first ever BRC trip leader in 1929 and a Maine Guide. To celebrate everyone at their activities must go hardcore and exude Buck Hard’s grit and wilderness skills.
Ten minutes after the second period something surprising happened, a bell rang. Not just any bell, but a Whale bell! Yes, Gavin L. woke up at 6:00 in the morning, covered himself in crisco and hopped right into the water to swim all the way around the lake. When the bell rang everyone rushed down to the waterfront to cheer him on for the last leg of the incredible swim. He finished up with a wonderful time and a Big Birch Rock cheer. Way to go Gavin!
As the day geared towards lunch a table entered the middle of the grove. “Change my mind,” it said. The debate: whether we should replace dessert with fruit. Many campers, counselors and even the director gave opinions on the matter. Near the end a heavy conclusion was decided that we should change lunch dessert to a different fruit everyday.
As the day got hotter the activities kept passing and we all settled down for a nice rest period. Dinner was an outside meal of stuffing and turkey on bread. The conclusion to our day was the first ever game of Fox in The Hen House this year! An exciting game involving flags, cones to capture and a basket to win the game. The energy was high and the fun was endless. We’re excited to see more amazing weather to come!
