It’s summer camp. Sometimes we have messy meals, sometimes it’s just hot dogs and hamburgers. What if I told you there was a secret club you can join for that messy meal? The Clean Plate Club is a coveted Birch Rock Tradition. If a camper successfully can clean off their plate (no fingers or licking allowed) after a messy meal they have the opportunity to join the club. What do they get for joining? I have no idea. I do however know what else went on today on the hillside!

Camp started off the day with a departure of two trips for the Moose age group. Flagstaff, a canoeing trip, got geared up and launched off ready to paddle. The backpacking trip, Carter Dome, has not been done in 5+ years and now with its revival the other half of the Moose are out in the White Mountains of New Hampshire.

As the day went on, the waterfront was electric with an exciting new activity; underwater archery. Multiple badges were thrown out for campers on the field. Baxter S and Marshall B both got their junior basketball along with Benjamin S earning his junior tennis! Unfortunately for the waterfront it was a different story. In the afternoon both a canoe and a kayak got swamped along with a sailboat “turtling” during 3rd period (all by accident). Nonetheless they were all swiftly rescued by our wonderful group of campers and counselors in an admirable feat of perseverance.

As the activities came to an end and the flagpole bell rang we enjoyed a wonderful outdoor dinner of chop suet and garlic bread… but the day can’t be finished yet! Nick Ferraina has an announcement to make! Tonight we’re playing Orb!!!! Also Ultimate Frisbee for the Bears age group. As everyone headed to the field, lower camp was informed about our throw and dogs style game Orb. As it always is, Orb was an intense display of jukes and accuracy for everyone. Once the ultimate frisbee game winded down there was only one thing left to do: an all camp elimination Orb event. If you get downed you are out until there is one camper standing. As the numbers grew thin the circle got smaller until only two stood as the whole camp watched. In a split second both orbs were thrown at the same time but Connor P dodged just enough to the left to stay safe as his orb downed the other camper. Connor P was the victor!
As always camp was crazy and as we roll into the first full week it’s only going to get a whole lot crazier. Don’t forget to clean your plates!
