A camper playing a cross-camp game.

It’s a sad day today at Birch Rock, for we have to say goodbye to one of the most important community members: Nick Musciano, our Head Counselor. Musc is a spectacular gentlemen who helps the wheels of this camp run. With big smiles and a positive attitude he lights up the camp. Musc unfortunately had to leave us this week due to his teaching job starting. As we all said goodbye and cheered him on, he left us with an important note: Always try new things. As he leaves our Waterfront Director, Jack Duggan, is stepping up to take on the role of Head Counselor (don’t worry, Jack is awesome!)

But the day wasn’t filled with only goodbyes. It also started with a hello. A hello from the Game Master! The Game Master? Do you mean the man left behind after ancient Biroca fell? The man who knows the secrets to the hidden vault? The leader of today’s game? Apocalypse?!?! Yes, that’s right, as the kids were showering and enjoying free time in the grove the Game Master came riding down to tell all of BRC that they will be participating in a game called Apocalypse: a Capture The Flag-esq game with classes, strategy and phases. Dividing the camp were two factions of the apocalyptic wasteland known as Biroce. The Engineered, a group of mechanized and genetically enhanced humans against The Scrappers, a ragtag covenant of mechanics and outlaws using ingenuity to gain an edge. As the game went off, strategies were formed and campers were running to secure the three flags guarded by the other faction. After two rounds the game was tied and a winner had to be decided to see who would win the keys to the Golden Vault. As a final tie breaker both teams put one flag on top of the field, sending all of their troops to the way top and commenced an all out war for the keys. Through hard work and a bold guerilla strategy, The Engineered came out on top winning it all for their faction.

As the day winded down and after a much needed swim, Birch Rock settled by the lake for a tree talk. Tree talk tonight was all about what gives you power outside of camp and inside. Campers and counselors came up in front of the camp to talk about what gives them power, why it’s important and what they can do to give others power. As the sun set, the smoke from Canada dusted over the hills giving the whole lake an orange hue, and with a sunset song and a hit the hay, we all settled down to get our rest. Rest is important because I know something you might not. This week… it’s about to get a whole lot more… mysterious…
