The campers are at BRC to “find their wings and fly.” There are many campers who have come from overseas or great distances that prohibit any possible visitation from their family. In the past, we have found that visitation day can be very disruptive and anxiety-ridden for the camper. We ask that parents/guardians contact the camp via phone/email to see if a visit is advisable. BRC requests a minimum two week adjustment period as your camper will be entrenched in our multi-faceted programming. In consideration of others, we respectively request that you do not bring your family dog(s) and/or other pets to visit as we do not want to cause any disruption to the community at large. Birch Rock discourages taking campers off campus for visitation purposes.
Campers love to get mail! We encourage our campers to write to you, so we ask that you do the same! Letters and cards to your children are very positive and personal. Mail is delivered on a daily basis (except for Sunday). Please mail to BIRCH ROCK CAMP, PO Box 148 Waterford, ME 04088 USA. A letter home to the parents is required on Sundays. You may email: [email protected] with the camper’s name on the subject line. Phone calls are not permitted unless special circumstances dictate that it would be appropriate – i.e. birthday or family emergency. If a situation warrants a conversation with your child via the phone, please contact the Director and an arrangement may be made at a designated time.
Your camper will be unplugged from electronics and surrounded by the natural beauty of Lake McWain and the Maine woods. There is no need for our campers to have money or any type of valuables including: watches, radios, laptop, cell phones, kindles and any type of electronic device………etc. Please leave those items at home. (If traveling via plane, our office will hold his electronic device and return to him upon his departure).
AUTO ARRIVAL In order to maintain a smooth intake of admission, Birch Rock will respectfully request that campers arrive to camp by a specific appointed time arranged in advance. Prior to the opening of each session, our BRC office will send a “Drop Off” time of 15 minutes increments that will be designated for your camper to be safely delivered to us.
Our camp administrative staff, health team and your respective cabin counselor will be available to greet, meet and expedite your arrival into the camp culture. Arrival will be at an appointed time arranged in advance with the camp. We appreciate that you limit those travelling with your camper to camp.
In the best interest of safety and order, we need to limit family access to our campus to the top of our hillside. We ask that once your camper has “checked in” with our administrative and wellness team that you depart so that we can immediately transition into our camp season.
AUTO DEPARTURE Campers will be departing on their closing day at an appointed time and the BRC Staff will be standing by to say “good-bye” with luggage and awards in hand. Please check-out with the Camp Directors prior to departure.
Indeed, as an Accredited American Camp and proud member of Maine Summer Camps, we have an extensive and thorough screening process including but not limited to: application review, employment and school references, verification of employment, criminal background check, sexual offender registry check, driving record history, personal interview, testimonials of character and contributions to the community are documented,
Our Camp Nurse will review upon receipt of the camper’s health history any medication management needs with the camper and confirm with his parents guardians on Opening Day. The Camp Nurse is responsible for managing all medications, most of which are distributed at meal times or bed time. Our Camp Nurse is available for camper consultation and medical support.
Birch Rock is fortunate to have an experienced Pediatric Nurse Practitioner. Additionally, our staff is certified each summer in First Aid, CPR and American Red Cross Lifeguard review. Our Trip Leaders are all Wilderness First Aid certified or Wilderness First Responders. The safety and welfare of our campers and staff are our first and most important concern. Our staff receives a nine day orientation with regards to their first response roles and responsibilities in creating a safe and risk free educational environment.
