So Much In One Day – July 29th blog
Posted by: Birch Rock Camp

Today was so awesome! So many things happened today that I’m not even sure I can fit them all into one blog, but I will try my best.
Event 1: The Midnight Phantom
Eagles nest woke up this morning expecting a normal morning, only to realize that their trunks were missing. As they started the search for their clothes, they quickly realized that the trunks were not hidden in the same place. Instead, the midnight phantom, a mysterious and mischievous spirit who likes to play pranks on the campers, had spread the trunks across all of campus. The first was just outside the cabin. Then there was one in the rafters of the nearby washhouse. This continued all the way down to the hill until somehow the midnight phantom managed to place a trunk on the floating raft in the middle of the lake! Thankfully, all the trunks were returned safely, but the midnight phantom remains ever elusive.
Event 2: Eddie’s Balls
Imagine the best breakfast food you’ve ever eaten. Then imagine something better. That’s Eddie’s balls. These delicious pastries take eggs, sausage, and cheese, and place them inside a luxurious biscuit-like shell. They are then topped with Eddie’s secret wash and baked to golden brown perfection. They are immaculate, and the campers were overjoyed to see that we had them this morning. They were enjoyed by all.
Event 3: The Art Trip
During the day today, several campers who often sign up for art had the chance to visit the Colby Museum of Art in Waterville! The campers were able to explore the whole museum and see the works of many awesome artists, including Gertrude Abercrombie and Stan Douglas. After their initial study of the art, they got to spend time sketching some of the things they saw, and emulating these artists.
Event 4: Bald Eagle
During second period, the sailors and swimmers got to witness a massive bald eagle, which seems to be hanging around the lake recently, swoop down into the water and catch a fish. Bald Eagles used to be endangered, and in the recent past, there were only around 40 of the birds left in Maine, so it’s always cool to see one flying around.
Intermission: The Return of the Otters
After a wonderful trip to Blueberry and Hedgehog Mountain, we recovered our youngest campers and brought them safely back to camp. They reported that both trips went very smoothly, and a good time was had by all! Welcome back, Otters!
Event 5: Some Stand-up Comedy
During snack today, while the campers were already excited to eat their fruit snacks, they also got a show. Counselor Eli M. delivered a hilarious 15 minutes of camp comedy, made even better by Connor P., accentuating the jokes with a rim shot on the drums. It was a great entertainment to break up the afternoon!
Event 6: Cabin Night!
Unfortunately, in addition to moving the trunks, the midnight phantom also stole the spaghetti and meatballs we were supposed to have for dinner. Fortunately, that meant tonight was cabin night! This means that all the cabins split off to different fire pits and cooked their own hot dogs and marshmallows for dinner. This is a great way to bond with your cabinmates as well as feel proud that you have the capacity to cook your own food. There was no organized evening activity tonight, and instead, cabins could be found playing basketball on the field or swimming in the lake.
Thank you, readers, for reliving today with me. I hope you enjoyed hearing about it as much as the campers enjoyed living through it!
