Medieval Day – July 31st blog
Posted by: Birch Rock Camp

Today was one of those slower, quieter Birchrock days—but still packed with the kind of small wins and goofy moments that make camp special.
We kicked things off with breakfast sandwiches and tater tots, which were a much-needed boost after a cloudy, slightly sleepy morning. Energy was low-key across the board, but in a way that made space for some solid progress in activities and a more relaxed pace around camp.
The Wolves are still off on their canoeing and hiking trips and return tomorrow. Things definitely feel different without their usual loud and chaotic presence, but it’s also been cool to see the younger campers take the spotlight and settle into the rhythm of camp.
Badges were earned left and right today—archery, swimming, and a whole lot of camp craft. Even with the chill vibe, campers were dialed in and putting in the work. Shoutout to everyone who got a badge announcement at lunch—big deal!
Biggest moment of the day? Trip completed The Seal, the long-distance swim running the entire length of the lake. It’s a major challenge, and he absolutely crushed it. Overcast skies, no big crowd, just a determined camper and a quiet seal rock at the finish. It was a proud, kind of poetic moment. Definitely earned some respect points.
And then came dinner—medieval-style in the grove. Not the dining hall tonight. We took the feast outside under the trees, and the vibes were immaculate. The grove was transformed into a medieval courtyard, with counselors dressed as knights, queens, kings, bards, and a few questionable characters. There were royal toasts, goblets of juice, scrolls, shouting, laughter, and some solid attempts at British accents. It was goofy, fun, and honestly one of the best themed dinners we’ve had.
Today wasn’t loud or flashy, but it was Birchrock through and through—campers growing, traditions continuing, and moments of silliness turning into memories. Tomorrow we welcome back the Wolves, and the energy is sure to spike—but today reminded us that even the slower days matter.
Until next time
