A Normal, Awesome Saturday at Birch Rock!- July 25th Blog
Posted by: Logan Landry
Saturday morning started sunny with a few clouds, and everyone made their way to breakfast ready to go. We had cold cereal first, followed by eggs and bacon, which was a pretty solid start to the day.
After breakfast, it was straight into activities. Saturdays are the last big push to finish badges before Sunday, and everyone was on point. Campers were working hard at swimming, archery, canoeing, campcraft, and everything else happening around camp. The energy was high all morning, and people were making the most of their last full activity day of the week. Campcraft is obviously one of the best ones, but that is not important right now.
Saturday brought another fantastic day on the water as four Birch Rock campers headed out for the 8th annual Keoka Lake Association Sailing Regatta! Competing in a friendly but fierce rivalry against neighboring Waterford camps Camp Wigwam and Camp Waziyatah, our boys showed incredible skill and true Birch Rock gentlemanly sportsmanship. Huge congratulations to Jack M., who sailed his way to first place yet again this year, officially bringing the coveted Camper Cup back to its rightful spot on the BRC mantle! Thomas P-Z also won third place! A big shout-out to John Flannery and Jared Whichard for escorting the crew, and to our entire stellar fleet—Jack M., Thomas P-Z., Spencer A., and Eton M.—for representing the Rock so beautifully. It was a wonderful day for the Waterford camping community, and we couldn’t be prouder of our sailors!
Lunch was cold cut sandwiches. By the afternoon, it had gotten very warm, and the Gatorade stand was seeing a lot of business. Like, a lot. The heat did not slow anyone down, though. Campers kept working on badges, bouncing between activities, and stopping for drinks whenever they needed one. Everyone stayed locked in, and the energy around camp was awesome.
Dinner was burgers and hot dogs, followed by campfire. A group of cabins performed the skits they had been working on all week, and they were genuinely very funny. Everyone was into it, and the laughs could probably be heard across the lake—or at least that is what I am choosing to believe as I write this very late at night.
Then everyone went to bed.
Except not really.
Later that night, the campers were woken up for a special event announcing Sunday’s activity: Apocalypse. The staff had been working on the reveal all week, and the counselors showed up in some truly extravagant costumes. At first, the campers had absolutely no idea what was happening. There were a lot of confused faces. But as the reveal came together, everyone locked in, the energy went through the roof, and the whole camp got extremely hyped for Sunday.
So yeah. A normal Saturday. Breakfast, badges, Gatorade, skits, sleep, no sleep, extravagant costumes, Apocalypse, yelling.
Everyone was on point. Awesome day.
Goodnight.
