It was a sad, but epic day at Birch Rock Camp. We were sad to see Cubs I leave us. They will all be missed, but we are already looking forward to their 2024 season at BRC.

Today was epic as so many impressive things happened at camp today. We had two campers, that’s right “2” campers swim their seal today! Gavin L. swam his seal in the morning while Luis G. swam his in the afternoon while Jamie C. rowed earning his Senior Boating Badge.

The morning was filled with campers being awarded badges for their hard work and dedication. Johnny B., Gabe E., and Everett G. all received their Junior Nature Badge. Otto P. rocked out in music earning his Junior Music Badge while Alex Y. took it to the hoop up on the hill getting a well-deserved Junior Basketball Badge. Meanwhile, down at Campcraft Ethan N. kept a fire going earning himself a Junior Campcraft Badge. Rounding out the morning Cub Liam P. was awarded the Sanders Club Award for Baseball on the diamond!

After a morning like this rest was needed by all followed by a hardy meal of American Chop Suey and salad. The afternoon was as jammed packed as the morning. Aspiring artists Wyatt K. and Simon M. earned their Junior Art Badges. In woodshop Brandon Z. banged out his Junior Woodshop Badge using all the tools at his disposal. Up on the hill both Vlad D. and Bosco T. volleyed their way to Junior Volleyball Badges. At Lake McWain Damien F. earned his Junior Kayaking Badge while Charlie L. sailed his way to a Junior Sailing Badge.

Highlights from inspection were Riley W.’s bed and Munn was once again best cabin. Cheered by all as super camper of the day was Thomas P. – Z. You may have heard the “TPZ” chant at your house. Dinner was a camper and counselor favorite of burgers, dogs, fries and of course salad with an amazing desert of upside-down pineapple cake!

This super packed day ended with a campfire themed celebration of BRC villains and heroes. There were so many skits packing a punch it was hard to keep track of who was a villain and who was a hero. The night was kicked off by the Narrator (Jonah) as our MC. He introduced a “Marvelous” rendition of Ain’t No Sunshine by Improve Boy (Theo) and one of the Base Brothers (Daniel). The punches, kicks and “weapons” flew as bad guys got defeated and sometimes won in skit after skit.

Sensei Rob Neff taught the group about karate. He spoke about how karate, “begins and ends with courtesy.”  This was displayed by a bow at the beginning and end of each kata (form) he performed. He demonstrated an empty-handed form first as karate means “empty hand.”  He then explained how a bo (a six-foot staff) was used as a farm tool in ancient Okinawa. He demonstrated a bo kata as well. He stressed that karate is for self-defense only.

The evil Pickle Boys took on the Jolly Green Giant. The Base Brothers dueled with Cow Bell Man and the Kayak Kamikaze. Brian and Musc could not figure out who was the good cop and who was the bad cop. Owl’s Perch may have had the most villains and heroes in their skit. Texas Jed took on the Pruey Master to both of their demises Bucks wowed the crowd with their story of the Toe Nibbler. Zig House’s hero was the strong Gluteus Maximus. The night ended with “The Rock” being the ultimate hero defeating both The Narrator and Improve Boy.
