The Heat has Finally Been Beat!- July 3rd Blog
Posted by: Logan Landry
I would like to start off this blog by talking about food. Every meal at Birch Rock is incredible and amazing, and Jon, Eddie, Steve and the kitchen staff do such a great job at keeping us well fed with not only plentiful, but also wonderful food. That being said, some meals are even more incredible and amazing than others.
The morning started with a dream scenario come true. Ask any camper from last year and there’s a 92.8% chance they’ll tell you that it is Eddie’s Balls: a succulent puff pastry stuffed with sausage, egg, and cheese, and topped with a garlic parmesan glaze. Chef Eddie wakes up about two hours early on these days to prepare enough balls for the camp, but unfortunately he hasn’t been able to make them due to an arm injury. However, after two weeks of waiting and healing, Eddie’s Balls made their triumphant return this morning.
A morning with Eddie’s Balls is enough to make an incredible food day at Birch Rock, but our analytical reader may already know what’s coming for lunch. That’s right: PIZZA FRIDAY. And what a pizza friday it was. With the hot sun blaring, the campers enjoyed not only the basics, but also some delicious experimental flavors like meatball, crushed tomato, and cheese! Approximately 372 pieces were consumed, and they were all enjoyed greatly.
Finally, we finished up the day with crispy fish sticks, mouthwatering tater tots, tender broccoli, and incredible cole slaw. Another shout out to the indomitable kitchen staff and the hard work they put in every day so that we can stay happy and healthy!
With three perfect meals, it makes sense that the rest of the day was also amazing. With the end of the heat wave on the horizon, the temperature felt more exciting today than when it seemed like it had no end. Campers stayed cool with relay Friday down at swimming, plenty of wet exits and capsizing at the boating activities, some sprinkler fun for the field activities, and plenty of water to stay hydrated. Some of the older campers went to the extreme to beat the heat, and made a trip to Frenchman’s Hole, a mountain spring fed swimming hole with a natural cliff diving spot. Flips were sent, splashes were made, belly flops were accidentally inflicted, and a good time was had by all!
The heat also didn’t stop Kie K, Thomas W, and Eton M, from creating a roaring fire to earn their junior campcraft badge, and Luca B managed to not jump into the lake long enough to earn his junior sailing badge. Today was an incredible day, and the kids went to sleep satiated, happy, and with dreams of a very special camp day tomorrow on the fourth!
