The sun is rising, the birds are chirping… and it’s almost 85 degrees.

Today at BRC it was a scorcher! It was almost a record breaking day on the heat scale. I’ve been here for a quite a while and I’ve never felt quite that bite from the sun.

Now don’t worry, don’t worry; we were prepared. We had a plan to stay cool amidst this extreme weather: Operation Beat The Heat was underway. Water balloons were flying at baseball, Volleyball was in the water and everyone was swimming. During free time our fearless program director set up multiple “hot stops” for the kids to cool down. A polar plunge involving a trash can and lots of ice, a tarp slide downhill sponsored by Dr. Bronner’s and a whole array of sprinklers to run through.

In the afternoon the oldest campers on campus went out on a secret mission to Frenchmen’s Hole: a natural waterfall and small cliff jumping area in the Maine woods. Whilst on their mission, the otters and wolves banded together for two great periods of instructional swim involving big games and cool campers.

Thanks to our nursing staff and counselors, everyone stayed fully hydrated and full of electrolytes. A gallon of sweat was dropped from our brows but everyone stayed happy and with a big smile!

As it all cooled down and the sun hit the end of its rotation over our beautiful campus, the night ended with a beautiful chicken parm dinner, a game of capture the flag and a rousing… leeeeet’s hit the hay!
