Two words: July Fourth. Two words: Road race. Two words: Cross Camp. Two words: Potato Salad. Two words: Dark Crystal. Two words: Fire Works. Two words: David Colasin.

Today was the 4th of July! Camp was bustlin with energy! The day started early with seven of our incredibly athletic campers heading over to the Bridgton 4 on the Fourth! All the campers (and even a few staff) raced their hearts out, and put in a great effort.

While many people take the 4th as an opportunity to rest, it was full gas here at Biroca. Campers in the morning raged through an Amazing Race, an event that throws the upper campers through a set of trials based on every single activity here on camp. There were canoe races, plant identifications, and plenty of contests up on the field. Meanwhile, the lower campers proudly marched through the town of Waterford, singing classic Birch Rock tunes and American anthems.

Lunch was a feast. John and Eddie fired us up some ribs, chicken, corn, rolls, and of course!!! Potato salad. Dessert was watermelon and we wouldn’t have had it any other way. Post feast, Manu (Field Director) brought the house down announcing our afternoon activity: CROSS CAMP! The afternoon was filled with strategic scrambles, sneak attacks, and many a pulled flag.

After a refreshing general, we all took a nap during second rest, and woke up to some delicious Italian subs and banana split sundaes from the kitchen. We promise, this year there was not a single sundae with hot sauce secretly hidden inside…

We finished the day with two movies: The Dark Crystal for upper camp (please watch if you haven’t seen it already), and Shrek for the lower camp (same message). Post movies, we were surprised by our lovely neighbors, the Whichards, with a rousing fireworks display! Campers watched colors pop against the setting sun in a picturesque end of a picture perfect day. A big thank you to Maine for providing us such a lovely day.
