Monday morning began with the ferocious hustle and bustle of departing trips. The Moose age group departed for the woods of the north with a hiking traverse in the Bigelow Range and canoers on Lake Flagstaff just below. We also bid adieu to our Leadership Campers who headed out for an adventure over the border into New Hampshire to hike in the Presidentials Range. We’re so lucky to have such beautiful woods, splendid peaks, and inviting lakes so close for us to explore.

Despite already dearly missing our Moose compatriots, the rest of camp enjoyed a raucous day on the hillside replete with “Beat the Heat” tactics, badges, and delicious food. It was a big day for Henry R. who swam his Duck (across the lake) and earned his Bowman up at the archery range – congrats Henry! On the waterfront, Johnny B. earned his Junior Windsurfing badge, Jesus R. swam his Loon and Kiran F. completed his Seal. Both swims earning these campers some resounding Birch Rock cheers.

At snack time, campers participated in a spontaneous game of tug-of-war facing off the oldest campers, the Bears, against the entirety of Lower Camp. Despite a hard-fought battle, the older guys ultimately lost to an ecstatic group of little guys showing off their muscles. The tug-of-war match ups continued pitting neighboring cabins against one another, all in good fun. As many campers as possible jumped back in the lake to cool off from the afternoon and everyone stayed hydrated, sun screened, and cool despite the sweltering, sticky heat.

The lower campers ended the evening with a crowd favorite, Speed Ball. With soccer balls, footballs, and rugby balls flying in every direction, no one can really claim any type of strategy but the smiling faces walking down the hill proved that a good time was had by all. The remaining upper campers dressed in their Sunday best for a secret excursion off campus. We’ll see if they have any stories to tell tomorrow. With a resounding “good night” to all, the hillside quieted down to a murmur as we prepare for another day of fun.
