Sandy Toes & Spa Day Glows! – August 4th blog
Posted by: Birch Rock Camp

“It’s Beach Day??” Wait… “What’s Beach Day?” Campers awoke this morning to a driveway full of chalk announcing the return of one of the most coveted Birch Rock traditions almost lost to the pandemic…Beach Day!
Today the lower campers grabbed their swimsuits, towels, plenty of water and sunscreen and boarded the vans for the trip down to Scarborough Beach. Camper Ben L. asked on the trip down, “Are we really going to the ocean!?” “Yes we are!” was our enthusiastic response. An hour later we stepped out of the vans and took to the beach. And boy did we take that beach!
Campers almost immediately were burying themselves in sand, racing around the tide pools, and constructing massive sandcastles. After a quick lunch of sandwiches, we drew the line in the sand (literally) and all forty Birch Rockers lined up for a ceremonial race into the surf. Counselor Jeff gave a body surfing lesson and campers were catching waves left and right for the remained of the afternoon. With grins on their faces, they eagerly awaited the next big wave. By the time we started to pack up, they were exhausted, exhilarated, and excited to come back and tell the Upper Campers about their epic day at the beach.
Back on campus, the Upper Campers experienced “Maroon Lotus” Birch Rock’s first Spa! The relaxation vibes were flowing right away with a relaxing yoga session led by Waterfront Director Jonah. Then came the face masks, cucumbers, and cool towels as campers spread across the grove for some early morning relaxation. In the afternoon, the waterfront opened for Paddle Boarding, our very own cradle sensory deprivation chamber, and general floating. For those staying dry, campers could sign up for journaling, suntanning, and friendship bracelet making. By the time Lower Campers arrived back on campus, the Upper Campers were resting in their cabins from a long day of relaxation.
As we hurtle towards the last few days of the summer, all of camp looks forward to our last days of activities. With plenty of badges yet to be awarded, campers enter this week relaxed and ready for the fun, exciting, and wild adventures to come before the end of our 99th season.
